Electric vehicles have been there from many decades, but they were not widely used due to lack of proper innovation and infrastructure. Now EV’s are gaining more popularity due to the increased concern in environmental pollution and subsidies issued by the government. But even still, the low range of EV’s battery is holding back people from converting into EV’s from IC engines. Although battery technology is improving all the time, this is a fact now, which makes them more suited for use only in cities and on short, local commutation rather than for long-distance travel.
CATL, the world's biggest EV-battery maker had come up with a solution for this with their newly introduced battery. On June 23, Chinese battery maker CATL announced that it will start producing Qilin, the third generation of its CTP (cell-to-pack) battery in 2023 that can deliver at least 1,000 kilometers of driving range.
According to CATL, it has a fast-charging capacity and can charge from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes. By placing liquid cooling functional parts between adjacent cells and large-surface cell cooling technology increases the heat transfer area by four times, cuts thermal control time in half, and supports a hot start in 5 minutes and fast charging in 10 minutes.
The CTP 3.0 batteries, or Qilin, are expected to be mass produced and come on the market in 2023.
